HISTORY The corporation was founded in 1983 by artists from the region of Trois-Rivières, under the name of the Biennale nationale de céramique. In order to widen its opportunities and yet more faithfully reflect its objectives, the event became the Biennale nationale de sculpture contemporaine de Trois-Rivières in 2003. A Board of Directors, made up of seven members from the arts and business communities ensures, together with an organising committee, the successful planning of each event. Financial aid is assured at the federal, provincial and municipal levels, in association with sponsorship from organizations and businesses of the community.
MANDATE The BNSC has the mandate to organize, exhibit and promote exhibitions and events that reflect the wider field of contemporary sculptural practice in Quebec and throughout Canada. Its objective is to bear witness to the vitality of sculpture, to encourage innovation and to promote reflection, discussion and exchange around questions related to the contemporary practice of sculpture, as well as to increase public awareness and interest in contemporary sculpture.
ARTISTIC ORIENTATION AND SELECTION COMMITTEE: The committee has the mandate to establish the artistic orientation of the event and to choose the theme and the invited artists.-Paryse Martin, artist and sessional instructor at the Université Laval, Quebec – Louise Paillé, artist, historian and art theoretician – Christiane Simoneau, BNSC Administration Director – Josée Wingen, artist and Artistic Director of the BNSC.
Trompe-l’oeil au cube
…the fine line between the true and the false
The theme is a vehicle for questioning spatiality within a sensualist, dynamic and pluralist perspective. One aspect of trompe-l’oeil resides in creating a feeling of space through the use of visual artifice Our intention is to question the traditional aims of trompe l’oeil through the creation of works composed of illusion, doubt, fiction and artifice that will have an impact on both physical space and the realm of the mind.
In order to stimulate artistic renewal, the BNSC sets up new artistic orientation and selection committees for each new event, committees to which the organization invites professionals well-known for their expertise and for their familiarity with both the Quebecois and Canadian art world. These meetings, in bringing together people with different viewpoints, stimulate discussion and encourage serious theoretical reflection, thus contributing to the vitality of the event and promoting innovation, reflection and discussion related to contemporary practice in sculpture.
ORIGINAL WORKS The selection committee favours the presentation of works issuing from emerging practices and new tendencies that reflect an eclectic facet of the discipline. Artists are invited to create an original work connected to the theme of the BNSC.
THE BNSC AND THE PUBLIC The BNSC is one of the Mauricie’s important artistic events. The principal aim of the biennial is to show recent contemporary art, and every other summer it becomes one of the region’s main attractions. With each new edition a wide variety of tourists visit us. There is no entrance fee to the exhibitions, and a tour of the different sites can be made on foot. We place great importance on the quality of assistance offered by our staff at the exhibition venues, and they are trained to help the public efficiently in every possible way.
